Why should you take part?

As the world becomes increasingly globalized, and our societies more diverse, it’s crucial that we understand and engage with various ideas and approaches to mental health and mental health treatment. Now more than ever, cultural competency matters.

There have been multiple studies done on why a multicultural education is so important. This approach not only boosts academic success but also improves creativity, increases emotional intelligence, and makes us all better people. Studies have shown that when you learn from those who come from a different culture to your own, your worldview grows as well. You’re more likely to embrace difference and far less likely to stigmatize those who don’t necessarily look or think like you, which is especially important in the field of mental health.

In our burgeoning global society, it is likely those receiving treatment for mental health concerns won’t share the exact background of their treatment providers. In fact, UK research suggests that asylum seekers are five times more likely to have mental health needs than the general population and more than 61% will experience serious mental distress. Therefore, learning about and understanding various clients’ circumstances, and having a working knowledge of numerous cultural approaches to healthcare, is crucial to reduce stigma and ensure inclusivity in the treatment room and beyond.

This program provides you with the opportunity to be exposed to many global ways of approaching mental health care without ever leaving your house!
